Brownfield site data

One file, every site listed here, straight from the councils' registers.

brownfield-sites.csv: reference, council, location, hectares, homes, deliverability and permission status for every site without planning permission.

How sites are chosen

• Live on a council's brownfield register (no end date), in England.
• No planning permission, or an application not yet decided. Permission statuses are written in free text by each council; we group more than twenty variants into four.
• Room for at least five homes or a quarter of a hectare, and a location we can map.

Reading a site

• Could take is the council's own estimate of how many homes the site could hold, from its register. Where it gives a range, both ends are shown.
• Site area is the whole site, in hectares (one hectare is about 2.5 acres).
• Homes per hectare divides one by the other, and is what makes the pair comparable. As a rough guide: under 35 is typical of houses, 35 to 70 of houses and flats, 70 to 150 of flats, and 150 to 500 of high-rise flats. Above 500 we say only that it is exceptionally high: tower plots do reach it, but so do register entries with the site area entered wrongly, and the data cannot tell them apart. It describes the council's estimate, not what would be approved.
• Duplicates. Some councils list the same site twice under different references. Entries from one council with the same address, area and estimate are shown once, using the most recent entry.
